The significance of shopping sustainable!

Welcome to our new series!

Here at Contemporary we wanted to share with you the variety of businesses who transform our pop up shops, and the amazing values they portray. This week we are going to explore sustainability and eco-friendly products featuring Emiko Studios and Ethereal Scents.

Let's kick things off and look at clothes, Emiko Studios is a slow fashion boutique which offers handmade unisex clothing for children and adults, the brand is inspired by vintage workwear and painting techniques. If you’ve never heard of slow fashion, the concept is the opposite of fast fashion and “leaves a lighter footprint on generations to come” - (https://goodonyou.eco/what-is-slow-fashion/ ).

Emiko Studios recently hosted the SQ Pop Up in Altrincham for 2 weeks and in that time shoppers could purchase various pieces of clothing, browse the range of collections, and witness the clothes being made.

We caught up with Coral founder of Emiko studios who has this to say about her business and her aims: “Emiko Studios is a unisex clothing brand which aims to give old and waste fabric a new lease of life. With sustainability in mind, I create bespoke pieces using natural fibres from my studio in Manchester, meaning no mass production and in turn, reducing waste.

We source natural fibre fabrics locally in the UK, ensuring that the materials are soft, durable and pass the ‘Emi test’ with my own daughter. Each piece has been designed with ‘gender-neutral’ front of mind, from the vintage inspired denim jackets with personalised hand-sewn names to the adjustable denim jeans with hand-splattered paint detail.

In further devotion to our customers and the environment, We have clothing longevity in mind - jeans are made using extra long fabric so parents can roll them up for now, and roll them down once their little one has grown more. We have even created a collection with matching outfits for parents to join in on the sustainable style statement.”

Let's move on and take a look at scents, homeware and aromatherapy. Ethereal Scents who has previously joined us at The Lanes Pop Up Shop, sells a range of natural and completely sustainable products. Some of her product range includes, wax melts, candles, bath bombs and homeware.

Using natural ingredients all products sold are vegan friendly. In addition, soy wax and wooden wicks are used within their candles ensuring there is a clean burn with no toxins released!

We spoke to Natalie, the founder of Ethereal Scents about sustainability and this is what she had to say: “Sustainability is at the core of all my products at Ethereal Scents. I use all natural ingredients and essential oils, organic butters, waxes and all packaging is recyclable and/or compostable!

After all, one of my main goals is to enhance personal wellbeing with ingredients and botanicals found in nature. It would be wrong to harm the planet and also ask for it's healing properties in the same breath!

The need for a more sustainable world is becoming more and more urgent. Climate change is having a dramatic effect on our planet and the change has been notable even in my lifetime (28 years!).”

To discover the sustainable range of products Ethereal Scents offers, head on over to our pop up shop from the 30th August. In the meantime you can shop online at www.etherealscents.co.uk
